Surfrider Foundation Cronulla was initially formed in the mid 1990’s and was revived in 2016. It has become the voice for the Sutherland Shire’s beaches and ocean by engaging local residents, to whom the beaches and waves mean so much. Greg Noll “Da Bull”, the legendary big wave surf pioneer and board shaper, helped relaunch our branch with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Greg was a Surfrider Foundation Lifetime Member, and he introduced Australia to modern surfing in 1956 when he surfed his Malibu style board here in Cronulla. Our branch focuses our efforts on positively educating the local community on issues that our waterways face, offering easy and practical solutions that they can implement themselves, and collaboratively working with
local businesses and government bodies.
Surfrider Foundation Cronulla’s partners on a diverse range of educational campaigns have included the Cronulla Sharks professional football club, the New South Wales Government, Mark Speakman (NSW Attorney General & former NSW Minister for the Environment), the Sutherland Shire Council, Toyota
Australia, Sydney Water, the Cronulla Chamber of Commerce, the Sutherland Shire Leader newspaper, Surfing NSW, Surfing Sutherland Shire, local boardrider clubs, local primary schools, the Sutherland Shire Council Lifeguards, the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, and the Sutherland Shire Council Libraries.

LOCAL CAMPAIGNS
POO MARCH – 1995
Cronulla had Sydney’s most heavily polluted beaches. Surfers were sick of swimming in the filth pouring out of the cliff-face sewage outfall at Potter Point, near Boat Harbour, and demanded action. Upgrades to the sewage treatment process were made, which resulted in Cronulla beaches receiving high ratings for water quality.
PLASTIC BAG SURVEY
Worked with the Cronulla Chamber of Commerce to deliver a plastic survey to the community. 700+ surveys were completed. The initiative raised awareness about the threat that single-use plastic presents to the ocean
RESPECT THE SEA & BE PLASTIC FREE
Partnered with 11 local primary schools, the Cronulla Sharks, NSW government, and the Sutherland Shire Council on a reusable bag initiative, which included an educational program on single-use plastic.
CLEAN UP, UP CRONULLA
Partnered with the Cronulla Sharks to hold a beach clean up and ocean litter educational day at the beach for children. 150+ participants.
BOTANY BAY NATIONAL PARK (Potter Point) RUBBISH MANAGMENT
Worked with Mark Speakman, Sutherland Shire Council, and the NPWS to implement infrastructure improvements to better manage the collection and removal of rubbish at the park and improve safety for park visitors.
COASTAL EDUCATIONAL SEMINARS
Conducted a stormwater pollution and ocean litter seminars with local board-rider clubs and local primary schools.
