The campaigners had no sooner drawn breath from the Cable Way victory than the Save Our Spit campaign to stop the development of a cruise terminal at The Spit began in 2003. The Labor State Government decided a cruise terminal would be an asset to the tourist industry. It took three long hard years to convince them not only that it was not viable, but was also extremely destructive of the wonderful natural assets of the Broadwater and Spit. This campaign saw the formation by Gecko of the Save the Spit Alliance with whom Gecko works in tandem to this day. Now, 11 years later, we are still campaigning to protect the Broadwater from the current LNP folly of an economically unviable cruise terminal, as well as the potential gross over-development of public land on Wavebreak Island by ASF Consortium, which also seeks to gain a highly lucrative casino licence.
