Climate Justice Mount Alexander (CJMA) is based in Castlemaine, Central Victoria, and evolved from a local community market stall established in 2019 jointly with Central Vic Climate Action (CVCA), a long-established and successful local climate action group, to support the ongoing petitioning campaign to persuade Mount Alexander Shire Council to declare a Climate Emergency. This six-month Climate Emergency campaign successfully reached its goal in December 2019.
Who are we? CJMA is a group of concerned central Victorian volunteers who support a Market stall, weekly at Wesley Hill Market and monthly at the Castlemaine Artist’s Market. The CJMA market stall and community outreach activities are focal points for accessible in-person outreach to the local community on meaningfully addressing the ongoing global Climate and Ecological Emergency.
CJMA provides:
* A place to share community knowledge and expertise on effectively tackling individually and as a local community the existential threat from anthropogenic global heating and injustice.
* An accessible focal point to increase community understanding of the existential threat from fossil fuel based Anthropocene short-termism.
* Informal, proactive and empathic community support for campaigning on climate, environmental and societal justice issues including petitioning, letter writing and responsible, science-driven, grass-roots activism for inter-generational climate justice and democracy.
* Locally supporting established environmental and conservation and social activist movements. CJMA members actively support campaigns by climate, environmental and social justice organisations including:
* 350 Australia
* Australian Conservation Foundation (Central Victoria ACF Community)
* Beyond Gas Network
* Blockade Australia
* Bob Brown Foundation
* Castlemaine Institute
* Central Victoria Climate Action
* Climate for Change
* Environment Victoria
* Extinction Rebellion (XR)
* Farmers for Climate Action
* Friends of the Earth and affiliates including:
– Market Forces,
– Move Beyond Coal movement
– No more Gas
– School Strike for Climate (SS4C) movement
– #StopAdani movement
– Tipping Point,
– Yes 2 Renewables
* GetUp!
* Greenpeace Australia Pacific
* Lock the Gate Alliance
* Solar Citizens
* Vote Climate One
* Wararack Initiatives – working together for a climate safe Leanganook (Mount Alexander Shire).
* Yes23 – Indigenous Constitutional Recognition campaign
CJMA members acknowledge that our activities take place on the stolen land of the Dja Dja Wurrung people, who have an ongoing connection to country. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging, and acknowledge that First Nations people around the world are leading the call for climate justice
