About

Mount Morgan Mine and the Dee River. The horrendous legacy of unregulated mining is outlined in the ABC Radio National – Background Briefing program – Mining’s Dirty Secret. 50,000 abandoned mines dot the Australian landscape, (15,000 in Qld) with many holding reservoirs of waste water vulnerable to flood. The abandoned Mount Morgan gold mine, which overflowed for the first time in its history three weeks ago, is still spilling acid and heavy metals into the Dee River.

Local farmers now say that the Dee River is an unnatural shade of blue-green for a lot of its length, and birds and fish are dying. This ABC link for the promo attracted over 50 comments and broke records on the number of times it is “Shared”. Share it to your own Facebook or Twitter links.
