About

This is a crucial moment in anti-nuclear campaigning in Queensland. In
recent weeks Premier Beattie and others in Labor have raised the
possibility that the party will drop their “no mines” policy on uranium at
their state conference in June or at least leave that decision to Federal
Labor. As you probably know, Federal Labor are also leaning towards
changing their “three mines”policy to allow more uranium mining.

Uranium exploration is already occurring in Queensland in preparation for
this.

However, the people of Australia are not in favour of this. Recent
newspolls show that the majority of Australians are opposed to new uranium
mines. A 2005 Morgan Newspoll of 662 Australians showed that
70% of Australians are opposed to the development of any new uranium mines
77% of ALP voters are opposed to the development of any new uranium mines
and even a majority of Liberal/National Party voters – 62% – are opposed
to the development of any new uranium mines!

We are calling on you to help us put pressure on Queensland Labor Members
of Parliament to renew their commitment to this important policy. We are
asking your organisation to write to Premier Beattie and you local Labor
MPs. We ask that you also urge your membership to write letters in
support of retaining Queensland Labors’ no uranium mines policy.

We are asking Premier Beattie and all state Labor MPs to stand strong
against the Howard government who seem happy to do deals with nuclear
weapons states like China and India despite the risk.

You will find attached to this letter a sample letter you can use as you
wish, targeted at Labor MPs, outlining the issues.
