What do we mean by Transition? When we use the term “Transition” we’re talking about the changes we need to make to get to a low-carbon, socially-just, healthier and happier future, which is more enriching and more gentle on the earth than the way most of us live today. In our vision of the future, people work together to find ways to live with a lot less reliance on fossil fuels and on over-exploitation of other planetary resources, much reduced carbon emissions, improved wellbeing for all and stronger local economies. The Transition movement is an ongoing social experiment, in which communities learn from each other and are part of a global and historic push towards a better future for ourselves, for future generations and for the planet.
Transition Banyule started in October 2009, inspired by the worldwide Transition movement and the training offered by a visiting team from Totnes, UK. We aim to act as a catalyst in building resilient, re-localised, low carbon, thriving communities in response to climate change, within the local government area of Banyule, which has 21 suburbs bounded by the Yarra River and Darebin Creek, and a population of 127,000 people. We have found that people connect more effectively with a community of 3,000 people, say, rather than 120,000; so we have actively nurtured and encouraged Transition groups based on a local suburb or postcode. Thus the Transition groups within our Banyule network are Montmorency Community Group (started October 2009), Transition 3081 (started 2010 focused on postcode 3081), Transition Warringal (started 2015), Sustainable Greensborough (started 2016) and Sustainable Watsonia (started 2018). These local groups run their own local events and hands-on projects, while Transition Banyule organises programs for the whole area, such as Transition training, Edible Garden Tours, The Great Transport Challenge and the Transition Streets program.
