Nillumbik Environment Action Group

NEAG - Nillumbik Environment Action Group was formed to help protect the natural assets of the Green Wedge within the Shire of Nillumbik.

About

The Green Wedge is a wonderful place. Let’s do all we can to protect its natural beauty and maintain the ‘lungs of Melbourne’. NEAG – Nillumbik Environment Action Group was formed to help protect the natural assets of the Green Wedge within the Shire of Nillumbik. This group consists of local Nillumbik residents who have a love for the area and want to see its unique environment preserved for people to enjoy now and into the future.

We also concerned about bigger picture issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss and clean energy. Many of our members are also members of landcare and other environmental groups. We meet every month and have continuous communications through our network, which also includes other local environment based groups. NEAG has an affiliation with ‘The Australian Conservation Foundation’ (ACF), which helps us with advice and some provision of materials when required.

We involve ourselves in local environmental issues and lobby Council on those issues that are concerned with protecting the integrity of the green wedge through various policies/strategies/environmental overlays/etc. We were in attendance at Council meetings when overlays C81 and C101 were being discussed. Some other NEAG activities include: environmental film screenings at the St Andrews hall, stalls at local markets and festivals and several events around the 2015 People’s Climate March. We lobbied McEwan candidates prior to the 2016 federal election, asking them to sign a pledge to support various environmental issues. We have also surveyed all the candidates in the Nillumbik Council election to determine their position on a number of environmental issues, and from the survey results we have come up with a list of preferred candidates. We are happy for people of like mind to join us and help in the endless fight against the pressures of suburban expansion that developers continuously agitate for.

This is a group that started life in 2015 as a response to bipartisan government inaction.
