Nillumbik Climate Action Team (NCAT) is a non-partisan lobby group of local citizens who deeply concerned about global warming and the impacts of climate change. NCAT began in 2019 with the aim of convincing our Shire Council to declare a Climate Emergency. We are delighted to announce that we succeeded in this aim in 2022!
It was great to see Nillumbik Shire’s Declaration of the Climate Emergency and Climate Action Plan, and we commend Council for this action. We want to work with Council, and with our local community and climate and environment groups, to help ensure this Plan succeeds. But there is so much more to do. As widely reported in the media, recent reports from the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warn that human civilisation will be severely impacted by 2050 if we don’t put a stop to climate warming emissions quickly.
The time for stalling is over. While every action helps, and positive changes to our own daily habits and decisions are all very important, we believe that joining with others to push for the wider changes needed is our best hope. Australia’s climate has warmed by about 1.4 degrees since 1910 and we are already experiencing varying impacts across the country. Victoria is projected to become hotter and experience more extreme weather events such as drought, storms, floods and bushfires. This means greater risk to our health, food supply, property and infrastructure, not to mention damage to our environment. In Nillumbik, we are very aware of bushfire risk and as a community highly value our green-wedge values and beautiful natural environment.
Join us to help protect our environment, our quality of life, and everything we love from climate warming.
