About

We are a group whose members know and love the waters and surrounding rivers, wetlands and islands of the Great Sandy Strait. We formed in response to discovering imminent approval of a large open cut coal mine in the Susan River and Mary River catchment area. Also gas fracking is planned for much of the area north of Cootharabah. These industries are totally inappropriate in these sensitive areas and would have devastating effect on the ecosystems there.

The pristine environment which also draws huge economic benefit from tourism is under threat and must be protected. GSSS aims to inform the public of these issues and grow a grass roots movement of local people and businesses to oppose such developments.
