We are a group of volunteers from the NSW Northern Rivers area, working for 350.org’s Go Fossil Free divestment campaign… an international movement asking banks, super funds, institutions and individual investors to support a fossil fuel free future with their savings and investments. Why? Watch “Do the Math” Bill McKibben’s film. http://vimeo.com/66066932 Check out the new 350.org Global Go Fossil Free site at http://gofossilfree.org/ With a link to the new Australian site. Take the pledge and add your name to the letter Market Forces will send to the big banks http://openletter.marketforces.org.au/ Join us! We need more committed volunteers (even if you can commit only for a shortish time) We meet each fortnight at the moment, on Tuesday, usually at someone’s home in Byron Bay. If you would like to come to a meeting, please contact us and we will be delighted to give you the next meeting time and place. BANKING ALTERNATIVES
Below is a list of alternative banking options in the Byron Shire. The following organisations have replied to our queries about their position on investment in the coal and gas industries: Southern Cross Credit Union – Byron Bay, Lennox Head, Mullumbimby “As a community credit union, Southern Cross Credit Union’s primary use of funds is lending to people within our community of northern NSW and south east QLD for personal loans, housing, investment and, to a lesser extent, commercial properties and businesses.” Bank of Queensland – Byron Bay, “As a smaller bank, we are not involved in financing large mining projects but do lend money to some small and medium sized businesses who could have either direct or indirect exposure to the mining sector.” Summerland Credit Union – Bangalow, Ocean Shores “Summerland does not have any loans to organisations involved in the fossil fuel exploration/export business. Summerland’s primary lending focus is concentrated around residential mortgages, small/medium business and community organisations as well as personal loans.” For further banking options in areas outside the Byron Shire refer to a list of various banks and where they stand on fossil fuel investments here: http://www.marketforces.org.au/banks/compare/
