Fireproof Australia is a campaign of civil resistance proportional to the existential threat we face.
Why Fireproof Australia?
– We’ve f**king burned, our lungs have filled with poisonous smoke, our houses have been burned and washed away and our country will be destroyed by climate breakdown if we don’t act.
– We have been betrayed by our government and broken political system. Those in power are criminals willing to spend plenty of money on making the problems worse, denial and distractions, but not fixing it or telling the truth.
– We have to honour those that are defending us, those that have been abandoned, and be prepared for the disasters that are coming our way.
The 2019-20 Black Summer bushfires killed 450 Australians either directly by the fires or from the toxic air that covered three of Australia’s major cities for weeks. Overall the fires burnt over 18 million hectares, destroyed 3113 homes, and killed 3 billion animals. The Australian government’s response to the bushfires and the wider climate crisis has been insufficient. We have a plan.
We are a politically unaffiliated group of ordinary citizens taking action to force our government to respond urgently to the climate crisis. We have been researching successful techniques which have been used in the past by common people to bring about political change. We have found it is best to galvanise under one winnable topic and then move on to bigger things. We are aiming to convince the government that more action must be taken to protect Australians from burning to death. Time is short, through February 2022 we are running a number of forums to gather strength in numbers so that we can go on to win bigger and better campaigns.
WHAT DO WE WANT
Our demands are simple:
1. Build a Large Air Tanker fleet: The Australian Federal government must secure a self-sufficient, Australian-based and owned aerial firefighting fleet to defend us against longer fire seasons and the threat of mega-fires.
2. Smoke-proof our schools, aged care and disability centres: The Government must act on their duty of care to protect us from toxic bushfire smoke. Starting with the young and vulnerable by ensuring that all schools, aged care and disability services have effective air conditioning and air filtration.
3. Rehome bushfire survivors: The Government must act directly to rehouse those who remain homeless or in temporary accommodation after 12 months due to extreme weather events. Housing must be to the standard of existing social housing plus any local overlays and be delivered within 18 months of the original weather event.
HOW DO WE INTEND TO GET THAT?
