XRRR Is a visually and emotionally powerful piece of street theatre created to support the actions of EXTINCTION REBELLION. We acknowledge and pay respects to the traditional owners of the land on which we tread. We are on stolen land. Sovereignty was never ceded.
OUR MANDATE: The Sydney Red Rebels are part of a worldwide movement of Red Rebel performance activists. They reflect the nonviolent principles of Extinction Rebellion. Red Rebels embody an ethereal aesthetic, through costume, make-up, and slow movements. Accompanied by the Rebel Minders, they captivate attention by reclaiming public spaces. Reds have the capacity to de-escalate tense protest situations with their brave, confronting, silent presence. Reds aim to avoid arrest, but push the boundaries of peaceful civil disobedience for the sake of hope for all living beings. …and a little bit of background-We are inspired by Doug Francisco’s XR Invisible Theatre Red Brigade street theatre performances at the citizens uprising in UK over Easter 2019 that resulted in mass civil disobedience and a declaration of the British parliament that we are in a climate crisis. Red Brigade is Buto meets Venice Carnival style procession aiming to create beautiful disruption using the architecture of the streets to create powerful and arresting imagery moving in flocking style in en masse improvisation. Dress fully in red (long sleeves, gloves, headgear a must- no skin should be visible). White face. red lips, black eyeliner,brows and shoes. We source materials for head dresses as per the instructional videos, and we endeavour to honour the original XR Red Rebel Brigade and its creators by being and acting as close as we can to the spirit of original performances. This is going to be fun!
