WE CALL ON THE AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT TO DECLARE A CLIMATE EMERGENCY AND IMPLEMENT A TRANSITION TO ZERO EMISSIONS BY 2025. THIS REQUIRES A FORTITUDE NEVER BEFORE SEEN IN PEACETIME.
Our country’s history is rarely told in terms of the rich cultural and agricultural history, extending at least 60,000 years under indigenous land management. Australia’s economy is founded upon the industrialisation and commercialisation of the natural world. Extraction and destruction becoming the norm. The science is clear: we are in the sixth mass extinction and we face catastrophe if we do not act now. Biodiversity is being annihilated around the world. Our seas are poisoned, acidic and rising. Flooding and desertification are rendering vast tracts of land uninhabitable and leading to mass migration. The insect population of the planet has crashed, threatening the very basis of our global ecosystem. The breakdown of our planet’s life systems has begun. We demand that the emergency transition be directed by a citizens assemblies as we move towards a stronger democracy. We need to initiate, direct and oversee the implementation of those solutions that governments are unwilling or unable to achieve, because of election terms and state capture.
Our democracy has been captured by vested interests. The complicity with extraction industries displayed by our government has distorted meaningful democracy and cast aside the common interest in favour of its short-term gain and private profits. Some deny, and many advocate change that is ineffective or insufficient to avert the accumulating global crises we are facing. We declare the bonds of the social contract, to be null and void. We demand a new approach beyond politics and for the common good.
