Promote sustainable fishing practices and expose unsustainable fishing where it occurs

About

Our Sustainable Fisheries campaign actively promotes sustainable fishing practices and exposes unsustainable fishing where it occurs. Disturbing proposals are made in the current fin fish fishery review (March 2008). Most alarming is the plan to legitimise one of the most unsustainable forms of fishing on the planet – shark fin fishing. With over 90% of the world’s sharks and other big fish gone from our oceans, this proposal is unsustainable, unethical and a step backwards in conserving our precious marine resources.

Sustainable Seafood
Did you know…In 2005, the global fishing fleet was 2.5 times larger than what our oceans could sustainably produce. As part of our Sustainable Fisheries campaign, AMCS recently launched Australia’s first national guide to choosing seafood sustainably. Check our our Sustainable Seafood page to find our how you can choose your seafood wisely. Sustainable seafood. Australia’s South East Fishery is one of Australia’s largest, most diverse and complex commercial fisheries. Learn how AMCS is actively working to improve the environmental performance of this fishery.

• Ocean Refuges: Our Ocean Refuges campaign highlights the loss of Australia’s ocean refuges due to intense fishing pressure, and encourages Australian governments to reinstate large no-take ocean refuges for the benefit of all marine life and the fisheries they support.
• Aquaculture: Aquaculture is not the solution to the problems faced by the world’s wild-kill fisheries. Yet, the Australian Government continues to promote it as such. We are working to educate politicians about the problems with marine aquaculture and assist local groups in combating inappropriate aquaculture development proposals in their backyard.
