Parking Lot in Paradise

Over
50 Mallacoota surfers and supporters marched
on Parliament House in Melbourne on Friday,
June 8 to register their protest against the
East Gippsland Shire’s proposed boat ramp and
carpark development in Mallacoota.
Protest organisers James Thyer and Tim Fazer
handed Greens MLC Greg Barber a ‘surfboard
petition’ to be tabled in Victorian
Parliment.

The proposed 150m long and 3m high breakwater
and boat launching facility fails the test on
environmental, safety and economic grounds.
It will also destroy the local surfbreak. The
massive concrete breakwater will completely
destroy what is otherwise a wilderness coastline,
including the dynamiting of a pristine reef.

Bastion Point is the main surfbreak in town.
It is the only surfbreak within 100km of Mallacoota
that can hold surf when the wind and swell comes
from the southwest, the dominant wind and swell
direction, as the breaks are protected from
direct southerly winds. The proposed breakwater
will literally cut the surf break in half.

Its time surfers put a stop to the government’s
destruction of our recreational assets.
Please take a few minutes to visit www.savebastionpoint.org,
download a submission and send it to the Victorian
government.
