70% of the Australian landmass is either arid or semi-arid rangelands. We must sustainably live in and manage these landscapes to protect the biodiversity and natural values that have supported generations of desert people for more than 50 000 years. For many years ALEC has advocated for responsible resource use and integrated land management systems that work across the desert landscape. This requires governments, pastoralists, indigenous land managers, Traditional Owners and conservation groups to work together and share knowledge.
ALEC works on two levels in the Natural Resource Management sector:
1) through organising on-ground soil conservation and land management workshops with organisational partners and;
2) policy development as part of the Alice Springs Region NRM Council , Southern Regional Weeds Management Group, Territory Eco-link Stakeholder Reference Group member and continuing to advocate for better controls on water extraction, soil erosion, land degradation and the extractive industries.
ALEC also advocates for stronger regulatory frameworks governing pollution, reporting and groundwater extraction for mineral, gas and petroleum industries working in Central Australia, and runs a number of community campaigns including Alice Climate Action, Don’t Frack the Territory and Clean Energy NT. Education and sharing information is an important function of ALEC, and we regularly hold film nights, public meetings and information sessions, informational stalls and publish a regular online e-newsletter the Thorny News, as well as a quarterly hardcopy publication the Devils Advocate.
