Since the turn of the 21 century Mid Western Region local government area has experienced the fastest growing development of new large coal mines in NSW. MDEG has been engaged in the planning and development process of the Wilpinjong Mine approved in 2005, the Moolarben Mine approved in 2007 and the expansion of the Ulan Mine approved in 2010. Coal mining is also expanding to the Bylong Valley. The Government owned Cobbora project in the Dunedoo/Laheys Creek area is another large proposal in the region.
