Cash for Containers. We support the Territory Government’s plans for a Container Deposit System in the Territory to reduce litter, increase recycling and green the economy. Territorians will receive a 10 cent refund on many different types of bottles, cans and cardboard drink containers when taken to collection depots. The legislation for the system was unanimously supported in the Legislative Assembly in February 2011 and will come into effect in January 2012. The system is based on one that has been operating successfully in South Australia for over three decades. The system was opposed by the cynically named Responsible Recycling coalition of beverage and packaging companies, hotels and business interests.
Coca Cola Amatil has threatened to take legal action to stop the scheme. In response, the Environment Centre NT and Arid Lands Environment Centre collaborated to call on Australians to boycott Coca Cola Amatil products until they swung behind the system.
