Captured State is a breaking report that exposes the influence of the gas lobby on Western Australian (W.A.) politics, with some key new findings. 350 Perth’s new campaign is using these findings and the recommendations from the report to try to strengthen WA’s democracy from the insidious influence of the fossil fuel industry. As part of this campaign we are looking for people to get involved in discussing the report and its 6 recommendations with their local Members of Parliament. The Report explores the revolving door between the gas industry and WA politics; it compares meeting dates between fossil fuel companies and the government, with political donation dates; it maps political donations made by the biggest polluters in the state over the last decade; it shows the amount of emissions each project creates vs the amount they are supposed to offset vs the amount they actually offset. It’s great to see our report making serious traction in WA and nationally too. Senator Jordon Steele-John presented the “Captured State” report to the federal Upper House on 3rd December 2020. It is important that the environmental movement also makes its voice heard through official channels, to counterbalance the lobbying of the fossil fuel industry.

350 Boorloo Perth has created a survey to gauge the level of concern WA constituents have about the influence of the gas industry over WA politics. From fracking to the influence of corporate political donations, it’s important for us to collate data about peoples’ perceptions of these issues, in order to show our newly elected representatives that there is a high level of community support for addressing these problems. Update
With the new state government re-elected and confirmed since our last update, we are delighted to welcome the new cabinet position of Minister for Climate Action. Amber Jade Sanderson MLA will fill this role and we look forward to discussing serious climate action with her over the next four years. As our Captured State report showed the influence of the gas lobby over WA politics up to now, we hope that this new portfolio is a turning point which will give stakeholders like 350 Boorloo perth, the opportunity to be involved in discussions about our climate.
The newly elected government has a huge amount of power to do whatever they want in the next term of government. With that power comes great responsibility and we hope to work with the state government to seriously tackle the state’s biggest source of emissions; the LNG industry. We will be requesting a meeting with the new Minister very soon and hope to meet with her regularly. Now is a great time to build a relationship with your own local MP. Requesting meetings now to discuss the recommendations in Captured State gives you the chance to build a relationship with your local member and keep lobbying them on the things you care about most over the next four years.
