About

The Blue Mountains was designated an official Transition Town in 2008 by the UK-based Transition Network. Transition Blue Mountains (TBM) covers villages in BMCC area – see map here. Initially based in Katoomba, TBM is now sprouting in the Mid and Lower mountains. The ‘core’ TBM meetings have taken place in Katoomba, but we could soon see these rotating around the mountains as the newer groups grow. We hope that each village will eventually have its own group that meets – that could be up to 25. TBM is decentralised, not hierarchical, and has no blueprint for other groups follow. As such we are able to form partnerships with others in the mountains who share our vision of a society less dependant on fossil fuels, agribusiness, and values of competition and consumerism. We do seek to work with others to create an Energy Descent Action Plan (EDAP) to achieve resilience and sustainability for our local communities.

The local, Australian, and global transtion scenes. In a nutshell, Transition Towns is about preparing our land, towns and cities for life after cheap oil and (pretty drastic) climate change. It will be life, Jim, but not as we know it. Most food and energy will be produced much closer to home than it is now. We won’t all be dancing around maypoles – there will be a lot of digging deep, using less, and adapting to changes we can only imagine. Only by working together with a real sense of urgency can we survive this century’s equation of 50% more people on a hot and wild planet. Be it pollution, conflict resolution, or inequality, we really need to clean up our act. So let’s get into it!
