Creating a clean energy future for Anglesea
Repower Anglesea is a proposal to transform Anglesea’s former brown coal mine and power station into a renewable energy generation and storage facility and visitor centre comprised of a science, technology and environment museum, art gallery, theatre, cafe and retail store.
Background
Anglesea’s brown coal mine and power station ceased operation in August 2015. The local community has been consulted about future use of the land on which the former coal mine and power station are situated. Renewable energy generation and storage has been identified as a possible future land use. Repower Anglesea is a proposal to turn this possibility into a reality.
Proposal
Repower Anglesea proposes to convert the site of a former fossil fuel fired power station into a solar farm and battery storage facility that can supply 100% of Anglesea’s annual electricity needs. Building on the transformation of this iconic site, the visitor centre will provide site tours and house a science, technology and environment museum, art gallery, theatre, cafĂ© and retail store offering an entertaining educational experience for young and old alike.
Benefits
Repower Anglesea will deliver cheaper electricity for retail customers, an income stream for the community and investors and a major tourist attraction on the Great Ocean Road that supports local jobs and businesses as well as the environment.
