Surfrider Foundation Australia believe marine parks are an important mechanism in managing ocean ecology and protecting biodiversity from the beaches to the seas. We have active, local branches across each bioregion in the Commonwealth Marine Reserve Network and are actively involved in contributing to the 2015 review of Commonwealth Marine Reserves through the development of local and national submissions and actions.
Surfrider Foundation Australia was involved in the original stakeholder discussions when the federal government (in partnership with state and territory governments) committed to establishing a National Representative System of Marine Protected Areas by 2012. Surfrider believe’s there remain significant gaps and conflicts of zoning in the reserve network and our national volunteer branch network and national office will continue to engage in the Commonwealth Marine Reserves community consultation process and with State and Federal Governments to push for these gaps and conflicts to be recognised and addressed.
