After a ten year campaign the NSW State Government announced in May 2010, they could NOT proceed with their plans to operate an open cut coal mine. However, the decision only referred to an open cut mine. NOT an underground mine. In February 2012, Bickham Coal Company announced plans to investigate underground mining.
With the Alcoa coal mine’s imminent closure the heathland could all be added to the Great Otway National Park. This is something which Geelong Environment Council, among others, is now beginning to advocate for.
The Queensland Government should honour its commitment to a 50 per cent renewable energy target by 2030 by enshrining it in legislation and implementing a suite of policies to support and accelerate the transition.
SCEC sees great potential for a Container Deposit Scheme on the Sunshine Coast, and is working with the Boomerang Alliance and other community groups on the Cash 4 Containers campaign to raise public awareness about litter pollution and the need for urgent action!
