Although we have put up with the environmental impacts of coal mining in Queensland in the past, the forecast boom in mining development will create a massive degradation of the environment which is no longer acceptable.
The Connors River, the only remaining ‘wild’ river in the Fitzroy Basin is to be damned(sic) for the sake of the sulphurous, low grade, steaming coal,mega-mines in the Galilee Basin. CCC wrote to Minister Burke urging him to consider the potential impact on the vulnerable Fitzroy River Turtle
Gladstone Harbour has seen many years of industrial and port growth over recent decades. Industry has been part of the environmental equation in the harbour since the 1960’s. However the current scale of development and cumulative impact from multiple industrial projects undergoing construction simultaneously within the marine and coastal environment of Gladstone Harbour is unprecedented.
CCC believe that the scale of the plan is still over-the-top and inappropriate for this island. Even though Tower claim that it is only "a quarter" of the size of the original plan, it still includes - a 250 room hotel, 300 apartments, 750 villas, 250 berth marina, one 18 hole golf course, etc.
Capricorn Conservation Council is horrified that a Chinese coal carrier Shen Neng 1 has run aground near Great Keppel Island. We can be certain that this is a sign of things to come.
