This NSW campaign demanded that the NSW government introduces legislation into the Parliament to protect the Wyong Water Catchment District, the largest drinking water resource on the Central Coast, from mineral extraction, and to protect homes from being undermined by longwall coal mining.
To support and strengthen existing campaigns for a nuclear-free Australia, the Poola Foundation (Tom Kantor Fund), Friends of the Earth Australia and the Australian Conservation Foundation have joined forces to establish the Beyond Nuclear Initiative. It was set up in early 2006.
ALEC advocates for stronger regulatory frameworks governing pollution, reporting and groundwater extraction for mineral, gas and petroleum industries working in Central Australia, and runs a number of community campaigns including Alice Climate Action, Don't Frack the Territory and Clean Energy NT.
The campaign targets the NT government around Fracking: "The Government is trying to fast-track major fracking and gas infrastructure projects in the Territory. We need your support to help stop dangerous new fracking and pipeline projects to protect our land, water, air and climate."
This successful campaign helped to stop the nomination of the Hale site 70 km south of Alice Springs as the national nuclear waste dumpsite.
