This year, while political parties were counting votes to win seats in parliament, we were busy building power to make our environment the top issue in the long-term. Our community campaign is local, grassroots and growing enormous influence in the areas that matter for state and federal elections.
To protect our communities and avoid the worst impacts of damage to our climate, we need to close all coal-burning power stations in the next decade and replace them with clean energy sources like solar, wind and batteries.
This campaign focused on the impact to barramundi by Rey Resources' proposed coal mine 4 km from Snake Creek and 5 km from the Camballin barrage, an area renowned for trophy-sized Barramundi.
In the 2000s, we successfully campaigned against a government proposal to send water by canal from the Fitzroy to drought-stricken Perth. In recent years, government and industry have shown renewed enthusiasm for broadscale agriculture in the Fitzroy Valley, despite the failure of past proposals.
Our long-term strategy is to achieve a legislated fracking ban in the Kimberley (and all of WA). To prevent pollution to Kimberley aquifers, wetlands and rivers like the Fitzroy, we must move now.
