In the 2000s, we successfully campaigned against a government proposal to send water by canal from the Fitzroy to drought-stricken Perth. In recent years, government and industry have shown renewed enthusiasm for broadscale agriculture in the Fitzroy Valley, despite the failure of past proposals.
Our long-term strategy is to achieve a legislated fracking ban in the Kimberley (and all of WA). To prevent pollution to Kimberley aquifers, wetlands and rivers like the Fitzroy, we must move now.
Victoria’s outdated planning regulations are still forcing thousands of new houses and developments to connect to the gas network every year. Changing these laws is a simple and urgent first step in the path to phasing out fossil gas.
Our campaign to stop a new allocation of brown coal in Gippsland – the first step of a major new brown coal export industry for Victoria – continued to put pressure on the state government, and in December 2012 they decided to delay allocations for a second time.
