The logging of jarrah and marri trees in the Mowen Forest will affect threatened animal species such as the Forest Red-Tailed Black Cockatoo, Baudin's Cockatoo, Brush-tailed Phascogale, Orange-bellied Frog and the Quokka. In 2015 our group raised $110,000 in pledges to buy Mowen Forest from the State Government. A cheque was offered to the Premier but he declined to accept it. We also raised more than $10,000 in funds to support protestors who faced fines after participating in non- violent direct action. + visit the Save the Mowen Forest camp.
As part of the Gardens of Stone Stage 2 campaign we are actively monitoring environmental damage happening on the Newnes Plateau and lobbying Forests NSW for better management practices.
LEAN also believes the EPBC is broken. Even without this capitulation to the states, the EPBC is not delivering the protection nature deserves. LEAN is calling for Labor to rethink our approach to nature protection and redesign the legislative and regulatory framework to ensure nature has a fair chance in this fair land of ours.
At the election Labor said it would reconsider ARENA's operations and funding, with the election commitments only definitely backing $300 million of industry development grants.
