(May 06, 2016) Currently there are some 50,000 abandoned mines across the country. The companies have simply walked away and left the sites un- rehabilitated. Lock the Gate is running a campaign to stop the rot and make sure the industry is held accountable and fixes up its mess. Mackay Conservation Group and Lock the Gate have begun a campaign to address the serious issue of mine rehabilitation. In order to ensure that mines are properly rehabilitated we need your help to put pressure on mining companies and the Queensland Government.

Mackay Conservation Group released a report last week which shows that tens of millions of taxpayer’s dollars will be wasted if the proposed Urannah Dam west of Mackay goes ahead.

The latest Mackay-Whitsunday Waterway Health report card continues to highlight the region’s poor water quality despite years of effort and millions of dollars to clean it up. Regulations will be required to improve water quality and protect the Great Barrier Reef.
