The coal seam gas (CSG) export industry in Australia is causing gas prices to rise. The solution is for Australian Governments to introduce measures to protect Australian consumers and businesses from the price hike now and into the future, such as a national interest test, and to support alternative sources of energy that are safe and don't threaten our land and water.
The City of Newcastle Council voted last night to focus investments away from environmentally and socially destructive entities, including Australia’s Big Four Banks. With a total investment portfolio of $270 million, the groundbreaking move makes Newcastle the fourth, and largest Council in New South Wales, and the seventh in the country to divest.
We're ramping up our campaign to keep coal mines and coal seam gas (CSG) out of our Scenic Rim. Encourage people to vote to keep their streets, localities, villages and towns Coal and CSG Free. The results are transparent, conclusive and above board - concrete, irrefutable proof that we do not want to live with coal mines and CSG production. The Coal/CSG Free Declaration might not be legally enforceable, but it gives our Council and local members an overwhelming mandate.
This current stage of our campaign to protect our area focuses on raising awareness and sending a clear united "no" message to our shire council and the State Government.
