Faced with the imminent threat of unconventional gas fracking, all different kinds of communities are declaring their towns ‘Gasfield Free’ or ‘Coal and Gasfield Free’, depending on the licence they are covered by. This involves a process modelled on that used in Northern NSW, where many towns have already protected themselves against exploration and mining.
Quit Coal’s first major campaign was Stop HRL, a community campaign against plans for private company HRL, to build a 600MW coal-fired power station in the Latrobe Valley.
This campaign protested against continued government support for the Hazelwood Power Station in the Latrobe Valley, Gippsland (regarded as the most polluting power station in the developed world).
Over 650 households in the City of Greater Bendigo, and Mount Alexander and Macedon Ranges Shires – plus a growing number of businesses – have gone solar with MASH since we started installations in September 2014.
We've been campaigning to stop a new coal mine at Bacchus Marsh for years. The minerals exploration licence for coal held by Mantle Mining and Exergen in the Bacchus Marsh area expires this month (2016). We have asked Lily D'Ambrosio to put the Mantle/Exergen licence on hold – not to renew it – pending the outcome of the review.
