Following the Jan-Feb 2008 floods in the upper Nogoa River, levee banks at Ensham Mine, 35km east of Emerald, were overtopped and river water flooded into open cut pits at the mine... The TWG has now changed into the Fitzroy Water Quality Advisory Group (FWQAG) which will help manage water quality issues in the Fitzroy River basin. Our main role is to ensure that the recommendations of the two reports, etc, are implemented fully and not buried by the bureaucracy.
Amongst other impacts, the effects of warming conditions on the Keppel region reefs are of particular concern as predictions are that coral bleaching will become an annual event within the next 30-50 years time. CCC continues to lobby the State and Federal Governments to reduce emissions targets and to focus less on carbon trading and more on the development of renewables and alternative energies.
CCC believe that the scale of the plan is still over-the-top and inappropriate for this island. Even though Tower claim that it is only "a quarter" of the size of the original plan, it still includes - a 250 room hotel, 300 apartments, 750 villas, 250 berth marina, one 18 hole golf course, etc.
