This is a group that was established to protect the environment of the Douglas Shire and to promote sustainable development.

About

The Douglas Shire Sustainability Group (DSSG) is an environmental advocacy group, founded in 2005.

Our Objectives
– To promote and encourage the adoption of the principles of ecologically sustainable development to all sectors of the community throughout the Douglas Shire area.
– To promote the protection and conservation of the unique environment in the Douglas Shire area and its surrounds including the Great Barrier Reef, the Wet Tropics and World Heritage areas.
– To promote social, economic and environmental balance.
– To promote and support environmentally sustainable practices education and greater environmental awareness of visitors and residents of the Douglas Shire area.
– To recognise and promote the sustainable practices of the Traditional Owners of the Douglas Shire area.

The DSSG represents a broad cross section of the Douglas community from Bloomfield to Wangetti Beach and has established extensive networks including Low Isles Preservation Society (LIPS), Cairns and Far North Environment Centre (CAFNEC), The Environmental Defender’s Office (EDO), Queensland Conservation Council (QCC), Rainforest Rescue, Queensland Trust for Nature (QTFN), The Wilderness Society (TWS), Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF), Greenpeace and Getup.
