Parklands Blue Metal Pty Ltd (Neil Mansell) has applied to Council to develop a MEGA Quarry in Coolum’s hinterland. Over 5000 public submissions were received AGAINST the proposed quarry. In October 2011, the Sunshine Coast Council rejected the developers application. However in December 2011, the developer appealed against the Council’s decision in the Planning and Environment Court. SCEC and our member group – – Yandina Creek Progress Association and the Sunshine Coast Council are now battling this developer in the Court.

Where is the proposed quarry?

Just 8 minutes from Coolum Beach – a mega quarry of 500,000 tonnes of rock will be extracted and transported along the haulage road of Yandina Creek-North Arm Rd, along Toolborough Rd and then east or west along Coolum-Yandina Rd at a rate of at least 1 dog & trailer combination every 5 minutes. The quarry life is at least 50 years

What are the risks of the proposed quarry ?

Dust – from drilling, blasting, crushing, screening and stockpiling
Noise – the are will change from a rural environment to a heavy industrial zone
Blasting & vibration
Flyrock
Contamination of waterways
Loss of species listed as of National Environmental Significance under the Federal Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act
Waterway pollution
