The rule makers in charge of the Emissions Reduction Fund are currently reviewing if the scheme should be allowed to fund upgrades to coal-fired power stations. It’s unbelievable to think that this Federal Government program could be used prop up Australia’s ageing, inefficient and polluting coal generators – and in the process, derail our transition to clean, renewable energy. They’ve asked for public submissions, so you don’t have to be an expert to write one, but here’s some points you might want to make in your submission:
– No changes should be made to the Emissions Reduction Fund’s ‘Facilities Method’ that would assist coal generators to access the scheme.
– The ‘Facilities Method’ is already flawed in that it is designed to incentivise improvements to high emissions facilities, whereas the Emissions Reduction Fund should be supporting clean energy generation.
– There is no circumstance in which extending the operating life of a coal-fired generator through the Emissions Reduction Fund is acceptable.
– No public money should be funneled into coal-fired generators.
