Community lands (eg parks, reserves) play important natural and cultural roles in our urban landscapes. For many years they have been under attack by local, state and national governments wishing to dispose of them as “assets” so they can simply make money, even though their importance as reservoirs of flora and fauna and for recreation, become increasingly important as a city grows.
TEC provides assistance and advice to community groups fighting the alienation of public open space and campaigns for new parks and green corridors. In 2006 we worked for protection of the green belt from speculative rezonings to urban in the Metro Strategy and enhancement of river and local parklands near proposed higher density centres. In 1998 TEC successfully led a campaign to change the NSW Local Government Act, to subject the proposed alienation of community lands to wider public scrutiny and environment protection.
