About

Australia’s coastal and ocean areas are vitally important for nature conservation, and are under great stress. Major threats include overfishing and pollution. Australian marine reserves are woefully inadequate in size (particularly with regard to no-take areas), as well as in representativeness and management. The Wilderness Society has been energetically involved in campaigning for the Great Barrier Reef over many years. During the mid 90s Wilderness Society campaign hard to stop the proposed Port Hinchinbrook resort opposite World Heritage listed Hinchinbrook Island. More currently Wilderness Society was integral to the coalition which ensured that the proposed resort at Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia was defeated. The Wilderness Society continues to campaign for full and proper protection of fragile Ningaloo.
