The Tarkine is an extraordinary 447,000 hectare wilderness area of world heritage significance that encompasses the largest temperate rainforest in the Southern Hemisphere, more than 60 species listed as rare, threatened and endangered, an incredible diversity of landscapes, and rich Aboriginal and European cultural heritage. Conservationists are working towards full protection of the Tarkine as a National Park & World Heritage area, with a well resourced Parks & Wildlife Service to manage the area, and with a well thought out conservation and tourism strategy for the region. The Tarkine is currently under great threat, with Forestry Tasmania using taxpayer’s money to fund the logging of ancient eucalypt forests in the Tarkine, and also seeking to co-opt all of the taxpayer’s tourism money for the Tarkine region to a road through pristine rainforests in the heart of the Tarkine – a road that would damage existing tourism businesses and open up the Tarkine wilderness to weeds, pests, diseases and greater risk of arson and wildfire.

Conservationists welcome the Tasmanian government’s commit to inject $23 million into the Tarkine region – but believe that that money should be spent on a well-thought out regional tourism strategy that benefits the WHOLE region, supports existing tourism businesses, provides better services and facilities for tourists, and provides better funding for the Parks & Wildlife service.
