URGENT…..
We must stop the senseless slaughter of whales now! I’ve just received very disturbing news. At the International Whaling Commission’s (IWC) meeting this month, evidence emerged that the large scale commercial whaling may soon be restarting. Firstly, Japan secured a proposal to conduct studies on the little known Bryde’s whales. Research which will prepare the way for commercial whaling. Worse still, in an alarming development it was rumored that Japan is forming a breakaway whaling organisation with Russia, China and South Korea which could see a return to the days of factory ship whaling. This means tens of thousands of whales could once again be at the mercy of barbaric attacks by factory whaling fleets. Unfortunately there has been little commitmentby the international community to stop the slaughter of whales since the moratorium on commercial whaling came into effect in 1986. In fact, over 18,000 whales have been killed since the ban was introduced. And every year the quatoas increase. This season, Norway intends to slaughter 671 whales, double their 1993 quota. Greenpeace believes the only way to protect these magnificent creatures from whaling is by creating a Global Whale Sanctuary. In the wake of the IWC meeting, we must take urgent action to make it happen. Your support will make sure our message is heard loud and clear from government cabinet rooms to the high seas.

How many more whales must die in agony?
Whaling is a brutal and violent act against gentle, intelligent creatures. Every whale caugth by commercial hunters dies in agony, its internal organs shattered by an explosive harpoon, taking up to half an hour to die before it is hurled on the bloodwashed decks of a ‘processing’ vessel to be hacked apart. You can save them from slaughter if you act now. The future of our great whales is in your hands. Please protect them by supporting our campaign. You can donate on our secure server.

Campaign Details

Group Leading this Campaign: Greenpeace Australia Pacific

Who this Campaign is Targeting: International Whaling Commission

Main Issue of the Campaign:

Campaign Ran From: 1999 to 1999

Campaign Outcome:

Outcome Evidence: News by Sentient Media in Sept 2023 noted that whale hunting still exists in three countries: Norway, Iceland and Japan. No further whale sanctuaries appear to have been created since the Indian Ocean Sanctuary and Southern Ocean Sanctuary were designated by the International Whaling Commission in 1979 and 1994 respectively. As stated on the IWC website 'An additional proposal for a Sanctuary in the South Atlantic Ocean has been repeatedly submitted to the Commission in recent years. To date it has not achieved the three-quarters majority of votes needed to amend the Schedule and thus become designated by the IWC.' As a result, the campaign has not achieved its goals. (Ascertained June 2024)
