UPDATE Surfriders save valuable break! (VIC). Fisherman’s Beach, TorquayThe Surfrider Foundation is celebrating a victory in their campaign to save a surf break at Torquay called Fisho’s. Plans were floated to build large break wall right in the middle of this reef and sand bottom point break in early 2006. After a sustained lobbying effort by members of the Surfrider Surf Coast Branch, the Great Ocean Road Coast Committee has recommended the break wall not be built and the original boat launching facilities be reconditioned.
The only way the break will be lost is if the local council and state government ignore the coast Committee’s recommendation. “We certainly hope the local and state governments respect the public process that has been undertaken … The Coast Committee have said the break wall is too costly in social, environmental and economic concerns. Their decision should be respected”, said Iain Lygo Surf Coast branch president.
From the Torquay~Jan Juc Independent newspaper (22/8/06): ‘Give us a break’ – Surfers fight breakwater, fear impact on wave. “The president of the Surf Coast branch of Surfrider Foundation, Iain Lygo, warned the breakwater would destroy a ‘right of passage’ for young Torquay surfers.” Media release.
