About

The Save Bahrs Scrub Alliance was successful in our application for a Logan City Council EnviroGrant to produce an information booklet on the valuable flora of Bahrs Scrub and surroundings. We plan to produce a 16 page booklet with photographs and descriptions of plants in the area, and hold a community information event to launch the booklet. SBSA expresses its deep gratitude to Logan City Council for this grant, which we welcome as an expression of Council’s recognition of the importance of the unique vegetation of Bahrs Scrub. Watch this website for more details to follow.

VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR NEEDED
– SBA Fundrasing
– Volunteer Fundraising Co-ordinators
Save Bahrs Scrub Alliance is looking for 1-2 enthusiastic community members to be the co-ordinators for fundraising activities.

PURPOSE
1. to raise money for scientific studies to be done (eg fauna, flora) to assist the community with submissions to local and state govt
2. to fund community advertising e.g. advertisements in local papers; to produce postcards to local and state govt representatives to lobby community position
3. bumper stickers, fridge magnets etc that may be able to be sold at low cost to the community for advertising and fundraising

FUNDRAISER SUGGESTION – Garage sale (needs a prominent or visible location) or stall at high profile local market ( is Beenleigh market still on ??)
1. Need a local resident to volunteer their home for location for a garage sale or a booking for a local market
2.Need a local resident to nominate a time and location for other members of community to deliver small items (possibly 1 week before the market eg weekday or weekend day after 5 pm for 1-2 hours). This requires a community volunteer and venue that has the willingness and ability to be available to receive and store these donated items for 1 week prior to the event.
3. Other community volunteers will be needed to assist with
– donating any unwanted items for the fundrasing
– wiping and pricing of items for sale prior to the fundraising event.
– assist with unpacking and packing of items and sales on the day of the event
– could also have a sausage sizzle as well on the day to raise more money
4. larger items (eg furniture) – make alternative arrangements for delivery or if too problematic, not collect these items and specify this when collecting items.

Members’ Meeting
The next meeting of the Save Bahrs Scrub Alliance will be a very special event open to the public. Held in October, at a venue to be advised, this will be our launch of the SBSA/LCC EnviroGrant Flora Booklet which our renowned botanical expert Glenn Leiper has been compiling. Please put this date in your diary and bringyour friends and family along to help us get the word out about valuable and beautiful Bahrs Scrub plants. New members welcome. Save Bahrs Scrub!

The Bahrs Scrub Precinct is an area of approximately 800 hectares south of Beenleigh, Qld, presently under threat of residential development despite being a potential biodiversity hotspot. The Bahrs Scrub Precinct and locale has long been known to contain valuable plant species as well as important wildlife species such as the koala, platypus, uncommon butterflies, and birds. The Save Bahrs Scrub Alliance has identified the presence of up to TWELVE endangered, vulnerable or threatened flora species in the Bahrs Scrub Precinct and adjacent areas, and is aware that the Qld EPA recommended the area for consideration as a National Park as far back as 1981.Due to limited property access issues, and time constraints, formal environmental studies commissioned by government authorities have failed to reveal the full ecological value of the Bahrs Scrub Precinct, which would trigger the conservation protection it deserves under State and Federal legislation. The Save Bahrs Scrub Alliance is working to encourage landowners within the Precinct to allow comprehensive environmental studies, and to report flora and wildlife sightings to relevant agencies. The Save Bahrs Scrub Alliance will conduct independent flora and fauna studies once necessary funds have been raised.
