Ralph’s Bay is a unique conservation area near Lauderdale in Southern Tasmania that is home to a rich array of birdlife and the critically endangered spotted hand-fish. It is also a unique part of our coastal environment, treasured and enjoyed by locals, windsurfers, and nature-lovers alike. Unfortunately Ralph’s Bay is under dire threat, with a proposal under consideration for a destructive canal-estate development proposed for the conservation area. Canal-estate developments are fundamentally environmentally destructive and have been put on hold on the Sunshine Coast, and banned in NSW and Victoria. If it went ahead, the Ralph’s Bay canal-estate development would wreck this precious conservation area, have a devastating impact on birds like the pied oystercatcher, would involve the dredging of sediments including heavy metals, and would ruin a beautiful part of our coast enjoyed by many locals and visitors alike!
