The world’s largest reef is managed by State & Federal Government with the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. However conservation of this natural wonder is only one of many competing considerations in how the reef is managed. The reef needs an environmental advocate. In the Townsville region NQCC is this advocate. We make submissions to government and raise public awareness to help protect the reef from:
increasing land based pollution (from increasing urban populations and intensification of agriculture – with land clearing and agro-chemicals a major problem)
destructive fishing practices – a land equivalent to trawling would see most of a hundred kilometre wide coastal strip along much of Queensland, ploughed recklessly every year. This would be unacceptable on land and we believe that it should not be acceptable underwater as it is causing massive damage to the sea floor habitat.
