Our Living Oceans. Through Our Living Oceans campaign AMCS strives to protect and recover Australia’s threatened marine species, populations and their habitats. Unsustainable fishing practices, continued habitat losses and the gradual but insidious impact of global warming are among the greatest threats to our precious marine life. AMCS regards these threats as only challenges that can be overcome.
Our Living Oceans also focuses on protecting the physical and ecological processes on which marine life depends. Such processes include water currents that transport coral and fish spawn to new reefs; water clarity which allows seaweed to photosynthesise and river flows which stimulate many marine fish to spawn and migrate. They also include ensuring there are bait fish to feed seals and seabirds, abalone to control algal growth on rocky reefs and sharks to keep fish populations healthy and in check. AMCS regularly reminds government and industry that protecting and recovering threatened species also means protecting the habitats and processes they rely on. If we can do this, then we will be better placed to prevent species declines and be further towards ensuring that our oceans remain healthy and productive for us all. Australians increasingly believe this is something worth fighting for.
Saving Australia’s Sharks and Rays
Australia’s sharks and rays are increasingly under threat from overfishing and are particularly vulnerable to overfishing. Several species are already officially listed as “threatened” or “conservation dependent”. AMCS is campaigning to see the killing of sharks and rays stopped in Australia. Australia’s Oceans Policy
AMCS campaigned hard to see this overarching policy developed to guide the wise use and care of Australia’s marine environments. Now that the policy is in place, AMCS continues to campaign for its effective implementation in all jurisdictions. Find out more about Australia’s Oceans Policy
Looking Out for Our Sea Life
AMCS regularly campaigns to save Australia’s vulnerable marine life from harm, our threatened species recovered and their habitats protected. Find out more about Looking Out for Our sea Life
Ocean Habitats at Risk
The Earth’s tallest mountain, longest mountain range and deepest canyon are all in the ocean. Yet these habitats are virtually unprotected from the damaging impacts of fishing, mining, bio-prospecting and other human activities. AMCS is working hard to ensure that these little recognised and poorly understood landscapes, their habitats and marine life are far better protected and carefully managed into the future.
