LATEST NEWS: On Friday 10 June, Environment Victoria lodged an appeal at VCAT against the EPA’s decision to approve a new coal-fired power station for Victoria called HRL Dual Gas.
If this power station goes ahead, it will pump millions of tonnes of additional carbon pollution into our skies every year. We simply must stop it from going ahead. Will you help us? Say NO to new coal power in Victoria by signing the petition

THE PROBLEM

Victorians know that we need to reduce our carbon pollution urgently. Yet this proposed new coal-fired power station, HRL Dual Gas, will pump millions of tonnes of additional pollution into our atmosphere every year if it goes ahead.

On top of this, it will keep Victoria in the technological dark ages. The rest of the world is racing ahead with genuinely clean and innovative technology for the future, and benefiting from the new jobs that go with it. Yet here in Victoria this power station threatens to lock us into inefficient and polluting technology for decades to come.

In May, Victoria’s Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) approved this new coal-fired power station to be built. In doing so, the EPA has comprehensively failed in their duty to protect Victorians and our environment. The EPA claim that this power station is ‘best practice’, but we know that burning brown coal for electricity is definitely not best practice when genuinely clean energy like wind and solar are on the table and ready to go.

Our federal and state governments have committed to dishing out $150 million of tax payer money to make the new HRL coal-fired power station a reality. In fact, at this stage they are the only ones putting money on the table, with Australia’s big four banks making clear that they wouldn’t fund the project.

Now, we need your help to put up the stop sign!

THE SOLUTION

Environment Victoria is spearheading a campaign to stop this polluting coal-fired power station from going ahead. And we really need your help

The fact is, there are better, cleaner and safer ways for Victoria to produce its electricity. Ways that will put us on the technological cutting edge, help us create new green jobs and secure a safer climate. Every dollar we spend on old, polluting technology is a dollar wasted. We can and should be spending it on clean energy instead.

Right now, we’re working with a coalition of environment groups and we’ll be taking out all the stops to win this campaign. We know we can do it, but we need you on our side.
UPDATE: We’ve lodged a legal challenge to the proposed new HRL coal-fired power plant Find out more here

TAKE ACTION

Help us place a REJECT stamp on this new coal-fired power station.
Please sign this petition now to Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Premier Ted Baillieu calling on them to stop HRL from going ahead. Go to it

Last year, 4,000 people objected to the EPA regarding the HRL proposal – the most objections that the EPA has ever received on any issue – so we know that the community cares about this issue.
After consultation with legal experts, Environment Victoria has lodged an appeal at VCAT against the EPA’s decision to approve this new coal-fired power station.

But we need a strong community campaign alongside our legal challenge to show our leaders that the community doesn’t support new coal for Victoria.

Please forward this petition to your friends online, and share it on facebook and twitter. We even have a hard copy that you can download and print here. That way you can ask your neighbours, colleagues, team-mates and the mums at school to sign the petition and then post it back to us.
