NEWSFLASH – CAMPAIGN WON! The PM dropped the Bill, because it would have been defeated in the Senate!
On the day of the scheduled Senate vote we hit 100,000 signatures – our biggest target ever – at 9.50 am. At 12 noon we put the message to Senators clear as day in the skies above Parliament House, and less than an hour later the PM admitted his Bill could not pass. Our best wishes and thanks go out to GetUp members, and to every supporter, MP and group who worked to defeat this Bill.
Please take a moment to thank dissenting MPs and Senators who had the courage to stand up to party politics.
The results of our No Child in Detention campaign have been gobsmacking – over 100,000 of you have signed the petition telling Senators to vote no to changes that will see all aslyum seekers who arrive by boat exiled into detention overseas.
When GetUp first set our biggest target ever of 100,000 signatures, people called it ‘pie in the sky’. So, we made a deal: if you could get us to 100,000 names by this week’s scheduled vote, we promised to write it in the sky. You came through and not only was our message seen above Parliament House, the PM dropped his legislation!
Dear Senators,
We believe in the rights of all children. We call on you to reject the proposed new changes to Australia’s refugee laws, and to ensure no child who comes to Australia seeking asylum is put into detention.
New target: 100,000!
