New Coal Plants in NSW
Submitted by Oliver Coleman on January 13, 2006 – 09:29. Campaigns
Background
In November 2004 the NSW Government released a Green Paper on the future of their energy policy. Green Papers are discussion papers, aimed at initiating a process of public consultation before the release of a White Paper, which is a policy paper.
The Green Paper claims there is a need for more electricity generation and makes it clear that the government wants the private sector to fund this. It canvasses the possibility of a New Coal Fired Power Station most likely as a Public Private Partnership. This is the most likely outcome, and indeed there are strong indications the government had decided to build a new coal plant even before the public consultation.
Consultation time for submissions to the Green Paper was limited, going through the Christmas break and closing in February. Despite this, members of Rising Tide were able to collect over 250 submissions from the public urging the government not to allow the construction of a new coal fired power station because of the need for urgent greenhouse emission reductions to ward off global climate chaos. A draft of the White paper has recently been leaked, and outlines plans for more coal plants.
Solutions
If the government was serious about preventing climate change, they would
invest in renewable energy,
implement measures to stop over-consumption, and
ban the development of any new coal-fired electricity generators in NSW.
