About

An International Disgrace!

Environment Victoria’s Native Vegetation Campaign aims to halt further land clearing in Victoria and to better protect and enhance the biodiversity of our precious remaining native vegetation.

Victoria has already lost two-thirds of its original vegetation cover. We continue to clear native vegetation at a rate of over 3000 hectares per year. Only a quarter of it is replanted.

Important woodlands, wetlands, grasslands and roadside remnants are threatened by land clearing. Even ‘bush’ which is not actually cleared is becoming degraded through poor land management practices such as stock grazing, weed invasion and creeping salinity.

Environment Victoria Campaign Aims:

Stop land clearing in Victoria. Read more
Ensure that native vegetation remnants are actively managed (fencing, weed control etc).
Tighten clearing controls and eliminate ‘loopholes’ so they are implemented properly at all levels. Read more
Adequately resource conservation officers such as Government (DNRE) rural extension officers, Local Government conservation officers, environmental planners and Landcare programs. Read more
Provide incentives and adequate resources for landholders to protect native vegetation on private land.
