Nearly 37 hectares of Lindeman Island National Park will be revoked if Whitehorse Developments plans are approved by the Queensland and Australian Governments. A draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was released this afternoon on the Queensland Government website detailing plans to use the national park to create upmarket accommodation to be owned by the Chinese company. You can view the EIS here.

The EIS says that 9.473 hectares on the western coastline is proposed for a commercial camping facility or “glamping” structures. The proposed marina development has been dropped from the original development plan. We will provide more detail about the proposal next week. In the meantime please sign our petition: http://www.mackayconservationgroup.org.au/lindeman_petition

Note from Movement Monitor team: More detail on the specific campaign goal and target is available on the petition. The text from the petition is as follows:
Hands Off Lindeman Island: Call on the Queensland Premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk, and Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection and Minister for National Parks and the Great Barrier Reef, Steven Miles, to reject the proposal by Whitehorse Developments to privatise nearly 37 hectares of Lindeman Island National Park in the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. Lindeman Island has been declared a national park because of its exceptional scientific, ecological, heritage and recreational values. Any changes to the land tenure of Lindeman Island will lessen the protection of those exceptional values. Public opinion, actively demonstrated over decades, indicates that citizens believe that areas declared as National Parks form a vital part of the state’s heritage for all to enjoy.

We call upon Queensland Premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk, and Minister for Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection and Minister for National Parks and the Great Barrier Reef, Steven Miles, to ensure that:
• The whole of Lindeman Island National Park is be retained as national park
• Lindeman Island National Park is properly managed so as to protect its exceptional values
• No national parks are privatised.
