Help Lock The Gate

New Coal and Coal Seam Gas projects are posing a grave risk to Victorian water supplies, agricultural land and rural communities. Unconventional, invasive and experimental mining techniques threaten to poison water supplies, affect human and animal health and increase the risk of dangerous climate change. Communities across Victoria are beginning to ‘Lock the Gate’ to mining companies, refusing access to their properties and denying them ‘social license.’
We recognise that, in the City, we rely on these rural communities, farmers and catchment areas. That’s why we stand with rural communities to protect our food, our water supply and our climate from destructive coal and gas mining.

To the Hon. [ MP Name here ],
CC: Premier Denis Napthine, Hon. Russell Northe, Hon. Tim Bull, Hon. Nicholas Kotsiras
I am writing to inform you of my growing concerns regarding the possible threat of new coal and unconventional gas mining being introduced in Victoria. The ‘National Harmonised Regulatory Framework for Coal Seam Gas (CSG)’ currently being drafted has proposed to provide a transparent, tightly regulated industry, but cannot guarantee; the health of surrounding communities, the sustainability and linear environmental impacts of unconventional gas mining, or the security and safety of ground water and the flow on effects to the wider communities’ food and water supply.
As a resident of [ place name/Melbourne ], I am deeply concerned not only for the immediate communities involved, but for the whole of Victoria, as much of our food and water supply directly comes from the farming communities where exploration licenses have been granted.
As you will be aware, exploration licenses for new coal and unconventional gas including; Coal Seam Gas, Tight Gas, and Shale Gas, have been granted in many regional districts of Victoria, in particular, the farming district of Gippsland.
The growing concerns of the Victorian public to the uncertainties associated with coal and unconventional gas mining and the impacts on valuable farmland, water resources, and local economies is mounting community opposition to the expansion of new coal and gas industries in Victoria. Multiple regional communities have declared themselves to be “Coal and CSG Free”. Elsewhere in Australia, local governments and individual members of parliament are voicing concerns and taking stance in opposition to unconventional gas mining. You will also be aware that in Victoria, 6 local Councils as well as individual state MPs, including MP Ken Smith, have already called for a ban on CSG and new coal in their area of jurisdiction.
As our local Member for Parliament , what is your position on new coal and unconventional gas mining in Victoria?
I hope that you share our concerns and join us in calling for a ban on all new coal and unconventional gas mining in Victoria, and to extend the current CSG moratorium to include all activities associated with unconventional gas mining, including exploration on productive farmland in Gippsland.
Yours sincerely,
